Operation: Sega CD

I've created this page a diary of sorts to keep track of my latest mission: to buy a Sega Genesis with all add-ons and several games.

My video game collection is getting stronger all the time, but it still lacks a Sega Genesis. I've managed to get by with Sega Genesis collections and anthologies published on other systems, but that can only get me so far. And since I do not wish to pirate any software, the only other option is to find the hardware and software online, most likely on eBay.

This page will be constantly updated as I discover and purchase new Sega merchandise. Enjoy!

Right now I'm on the hunt for three main things: a Sega Genesis console, a Sega CD add-on, and a 32X add-on. On average, a Genesis plus Sega CD costs about $100, and a 32X costs about $40. I should also invest in a Sega CD back-up memory cartridge, and that goes for about $60.

Here is a list of games I am looking at, along with prices:

For the 32X:
Virtua Racing Deluxe ($10)
Star Wars Arcade ($10)
Knuckles Chaotix ($35)
Virtua Fighter ($10)
Kolibri ($55)
*NEW* Shadow Squadron ($20)

For the Sega CD:
Sonic CD ($25)
Snatcher ($250)
Lunar: The Silver Star ($40)
Lunar II ($50)
Popful Mail ($60)
Shining Force CD ($90)
Silpheed ($25)
Robo Aleste ($45)
Batman Returns ($20)
Vay ($60)
Jurassic Park ($10)
Dragon's Lair ($15)
Lords of Thunder ($25)
The Adventures of Robin & Robin ($20)
Dune ($20)
Final Fight CD ($30)
Bram Stoker's Dracula ($10)
The Terminator ($20)
Dark Wizard ($15)
Jaguar XJ220 ($10)

For Genesis:
Super Monaco GP ($5)
*NEW* Landstalker ($15)
*NEW* Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse ($15)
*NEW* Flashback ($10)

As you can see, the Sega CD is the item that's most important, but its games are also the most expensive. Snatcher alone will cost double the price of the Genesis + Sega CD + 32X.

More updates to come!

December 17, 2012

In an unexpected turn of events, I ended up purchasing a Panasonic 3DO on eBay instead of a Sega Genesis. Don't worry; I'm still tracking the Sega gear, but this deal was too good to pass up.

What I got:

The second iteration of the 3DO, called FZ-10. It's smaller and slimmer than the original model, and it has an internal memory manager (something the original lacked). Also, a controller and all cords.

Plus 12 games:
Gex
Road Rash
The Need for Speed
Crash n Burn
Killing Time
Captain Quazar
Demolition Man
Escape from Monster Manor
Phoenix 3
Slayer
Soccer Kid
Wolfenstein 3D

The four games in bold are among the seven or eight I was looking for, so that's a good start.

Me playing StarBlade for 3DO at GameFest in March.

In another unexpected turn of events, I ended up buying an Atari Jaguar (yes, I know I have a problem). I got the Jaguar console, three controllers, and ten games. Among the games are several rare, expensive titles: Rayman, Defender 2000, and Atari Karts.

But I also made some progress with my Sega quest. I picked up five 32X games: Star Wars Arcade, Doom, Shadow Squadron, Virtua Racing, and Virtua Fighter.

I finally purchased a Sega CD back-up memory cartridge! This will allow me to save some of the larger games like Shining Force CD.

Well, it took over two months, but I finally bought a Sega Genesis with Sega CD and 32x add-ons! The bundle came with several Genesis, Sega CD, and 32X games. Unfortunately, some of the 32X games are titles I already purchased on December 21. Note to self: stop buying games before buying a system.

Some games to cross of my list: Sonic CD, Lunar II, Jurassic Park, and Knuckles Chaotix.

I picked up some more Sega Genesis games. All of them are sports games, none of which I've played -- with the exception of NHL '94, one of the all-time best sports games.

WWF Super Wrestlemania; Virtual Pinball; Hit the Ice; NHL '94; NHL '95; NHL '96; NHL '97; NFL Quarterback Club; Winter Olympic Games Lillehammer '94; World Series Baseball '95; Brett Hull Hockey '95; Madden '94; Madden '95; Madden '96; NBA Action '94; Bulls vs. Blazers; NHLPA Hockey '93.

July 2, 2013

I finally set up the Sega Genesis with add-ons and tested out a few games. Some of the controllers are a bit glitchy, but the games work perfectly!

  1. Have you thought about TurboGrafx-16? A childhood buddy of mine had one AND the TurboExpress handheld. Some franchises made their debut on that console.

    1. I've thought about it, but it's not a priority. Most of the high-profile games are available on the Virtual Console on Nintendo Wii.
