Master Chief on the floor at NYCC |
It might be called COMIC con, but comics took a backseat to other forms of entertainment this year in New York. Specifically video games. This was my sixth NYCC, and I have never seen so many video games on the show room floor. Moreover I've never seen them occupy such prominent spaces. The main entrance of the show floor was dominated by video games. Huge signs for Capcom and Square Enix greeted attendees. Further inside, fans swarmed the Nintendo booth. Video games have never been bigger, at the convention and in the world.
Sony and Nintendo had the largest presence at the convention. For Sony, the new God of War game was on display (along with a huge statue of Kratos), along with LittleBigPlanet Karting and Playstation All-Stars. Nintendo had several demo stations set up for fans that featured upcoming 3DS and Wii U games. I was lucky enough to play Ubisoft's forthcoming shooter ZombiU and Nintendo's party game Nintendo Land. The lines at the Nintendo booth were impossibly long, and they weren't much shorter for games like Tomb Raider and Monster Hunter 3.
Further proof of the popularity and cultural impact of video games was the multitude of video game cosplayers. I noticed a huge drop-off in Cloud Strife costumes, and a significant increase in Mass Effect costumes. Zelda and Mario were well-represented (as always), as was Metal Gear, Skyrim, and Pokemon.
Although the DBtC crew couldn't play every game (and couldn't visit Nintendo World at all), it was a great opportunity to play demos, learn about upcoming games, and share memories with fellow video game enthusiasts. Can't wait for next year!
