Super Mario 4

Several days ago, Nintendo registered the domain www.supermario4.com. Don’t get too excited – the link reroutes back to nintendo.com – but this could be the start of something big. Nintendo promised a brand new 2D Mario game for the 3DS in the upcoming fiscal year (April 2012-March 2013) in January. This could be it. Or, it could be a launch title for the soon-to-be-released Wii U.

Both are exciting possibilities. A true sequel to Super Mario Bros. 3 – arguably the best Mario game ever – would be awesome for adults who grew up with the mustachioed plumber in 8-bit, and for a new generation of video game players. A 2D console version of Super Mario, akin to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, could also be a lot of fun, and would certainly raise interest in the Wii U. The most unlikely possibility, but also the most intriguing, is that Super Mario 4 is a remake or revival of Super Mario World – originally called Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan. Or it could be another 3D Mario platformer, like Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and most recently Super Mario Land 3D.

  1. I had two wild ideas about where Nintendo could take the Mario series. I don't think either of these will have anything to do with the announcement of Mario 4, but I just wanted to see what other people think.

    1) A 3D remake of a 2D Mario game. What if they took Super Mario World and made it into a 3D platformer like Mario64? Same setting/story/enemies/level design, but in a 3D world. It's hard to even imagine how this would work, and it would be very ambitious (which is why I doubt there's any possibility of it happening), but it's fun to think about.

    2) Mario Geezer. We've seen a lot of the "Baby" versions of Mario Characters in everything from Mario Tennis, Partners in Time, and the Kart games. I think it would be fun for Nintendo to explore Mario and Bowser in their elderly years. I'm tempted to think of them having lost some of their physical abilities, but then again time could be kind to them and it's reasonable to think they've honed their powers over the years. At the very least, Geezer Mario and Geezer Bowser would be great additions to Mario Golf
